finding genuine workshop manuals is very hard, they rarely come up for sale.
Phase 1 Safranes are XR25 and phase 2 is OBD,the connector maybe under ashtray on a Phase 2 its behind the N/S headlamp on a phase 1.

The connector for phase 2 is inside the centre arm rest.

The service documents do however refer to it being a XR25 system AND OBDII

I have a ph2 Safrane. Is it compatible with CLIP? Ifound this with a reasonable price but I'm not sure if that's all I need. I only have experience of Citroën's Lexia which is a similar tool...

It is CLIP compatible yes... but it ALSO works with OBD2

(Yes... I know thats strange!)

If you do buy that clip set can you let us know how good it is?

Could the OBD be used to communicate with anything else than the engine ECU?

In a Finnish Renault forum they talk about A and B version of CLIP. The A version costs about a 100€ more but has more features. I'm just wondering if the B is just as good with older cars and the A is to get more out of newer ones. There are good pictures from the physical differences of the A and B:

I guess i'll try my luck with that cheap CLIP. My sister has a ph2 Grand Scenic so i hope it'll be of use with that too.
I'll try the OBD too to see what i can get out of it. If the CLIP is even close as good as the Lexia for Citroëns, then it's a must have :)

edit: I WOULD have tried my luck but the announcement for the cheap CLIP is gone :(

I noticed from your first ebay link that there was a more expensive clip version - that made me wonder what the difference was and it would usually be the quality.

As for the OBD2, I have no idea. My friend managed to get fault codes out of it but we didn't know what else it was capable of. They do both use the same data socket (under the centre arm rest) but not all OBD2 scanners have the right plug to fit it.

I really can't tell you anymore - I've only once seen anything connect to our safrane and that was my friend using a borrowed OBD2 scanner. I've never used CLIP on it... though I may need to if i have air in the ABS pump as I suspect

Just had a thought..

The renault documentation refers to XR25 - which I think is an older renault system like CLIP.

So you may need that too - which is a pain to find and very expensive.

Your Safrane will have the XR25 or the Clip/OBD connector it won,t have both.
My Dads Laguna V6 1998 has the XR25 connector so the Safrane may have that as its still early phase 2 being 1996.

We've had two 97 and one 98 safrane(s).

All three had the same connector. Phil connected an OBD2 scanner onto the 98 and pulled fault codes out of it.

Somewhat odd considering its meant to be XR25 / CLIP.
