I have ordered some cheap chinese diagnostic tool, copy of Delphi tool
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/2015-Dia ... 66665.html
I wonder if it will be able to do anything to Safrane, I will let you know when I get it. my friend has the same one and he said that for some things it is better than CLIP, but he haven't used it on Safrane. My safrane is also '96, so it should be similar to yours.

I friend of mine sent me some Safrane ABS diagnostic papers from Autodata. It has instructions of fault code reading by ABS lamp on a ph2, lots of measurement values for sensors & ecu, sensor clearances, pinouts and test procedures.

If anyone wants them, send me a PM with your email address.

But what does it do? Can it communicate with the ecu? Can it reset things and write me codes for keys or computers?

I didn't get in to it that much yet, but a t least i could connect the engine, abs, electric seat, and AC ECUs, read and erase the faults, perform various tests (like fuel pump relay, cooling fan, ABS solenoids, ABS pump etc.), read sensor values (wheel speed, brake pedal position, immobilizer status, fuel pump control status...), identify ECU typed and versions and so on.

It also listed auto gearbox, cruise control, power-assisted steering, airbag, alarm and maybe some other systems too i didn't try yet.

While connecting i was asked the gearbox type, can't remember which the options were but i randomly chose one and maybe that was auto because my car is manual and it still offered auto gearbox ecu for connection.

Here are some pictures i took:

I will do a more thorough test later when i have more time. Maybe i'll do a list of things it allows me to do and add some proper screenshots :)

At least there was a selection for it. I didn't try it yet.

Sorry, i remembered wrong. There as no possibility to activate the ABS pump, only the relay but it didn't make an audible noise in my case.

Here's some more info about using the CLiP with a ph2 Safrane:

At first the CLIP software detects the CLIP device and it then asks for the VIN. There's an option to read it from the car but it didn't work so i entered it manually. After entering the VIN it concluded all other info like it's a Safrane, model B54F and so on, but the gearbox had to be selected manually. The options were SO0 and VM1 (if i recall correctly) which i googled to be auto and manual respectively. Then there was something called "RO", which it needed but suggested using a 0 if it was unknown.
After pressing the button called "Computer test" the software closed and a new one opened which looks much older. I guess it could open a different kind of software for newer cars. I will test it with my sister's MK2 Grand Scenic soon...

The new app that opens looks like this: Image
The options available are listed here, i didn't even try connecting to all of them:
  • Petrol injection (OK)
  • ABS (OK)
  • Air conditioning (OK)
  • Variable P.ower Assisted Steering (Is this on all Safranes? I couldn't connect to it)
  • Driver's position (The electric seat, OK)
  • Cruise Control (OK)
  • Automatic gearbox (didn't even try it as my car is manual)
  • Immobiliser (didn't try)
  • Diesel Injection (my car's a petrol)
  • Airbag / pretensioners (didn't try)
  • Alarm (OK)
  • Door management (didn't try)
  • Discharge lamp (couldn't connect. Something to discharge the battery?)

After selecting any of the selections the next screen was pretty much like this: Image
Some pf them are pretty obvious. The fault erasing happens from the fault list screen.
Here's some pictures of the submenus (note that my engine is not running and the ignition is on):

I couldn't figure out how to see parameters #36-#43

a fault list and details of a single fault:

The connection was lost a few times and i had to start over, but i guess that's acceptable with such an old system :)
